Back in my early days of business, I was determined to do everything myself.
Everything. I later realised how green, naive I was.
Including the bookkeeping.
At the time, it felt responsible, even smart. I told myself, “I’ll save money, I’ll stay across everything, and really… how hard can it be?”
Well… it's not necessarily hard but you just don't know what you don't know.
About 15 years ago, I found myself staring at a tax and GST situation I had completely miscalculated. Not intentionally, I was simply inexperienced and stretched too far. I still remember thinking:
“If I’m spending this much energy trying to understand bookkeeping, who is actually steering the business?”
That moment changed how I approached business forever.
And it reminded me of what I used to teach in my Property with Purpose days:
Surround yourself with trusted experts.
It’s true in property. It’s even more true in business.
So many business owners fall into the same trap I did. We think being “hands-on” means doing all the things.
But the reality?
Trying to be your own accountant, bookkeeper, lawyer, broker, administrator, marketer, HR team, and strategist is a fast track to burnout, and it quietly limits growth.
Here’s the truth I repeat to clients all the time:
You don’t save money by doing everything yourself.
You save money by doing what you’re brilliant at, and strategically using experts do the rest.
You don’t need a huge team.
But you do need the right people.
Here are the core professionals I encourage every business owner to bring into their support network:
Someone who stays ahead of legislation so you don’t accidentally fall behind. When you have the right accountant, you feel lighter, instantly.
Your financial heartbeat. They keep things accurate, timely and tidy. They prevent surprises… and surprises are usually what cause stress.
Contracts, terms, leases, these protect your future self. A good lawyer saves you from expensive headaches later.
Someone who can explain what’s actually covered (and what’s not). Because it’s never the policy — it’s the fine print.
They help you structure lending so your business can grow without drowning in repayments or red tape.
Whether it’s brand, messaging, digital, or content, a good marketer helps you stay visible and consistent. They make sure the right people hear about your business in the right way, saving you time and breaking the “feast or famine” cycle so many business owners face.
From websites and automations to cybersecurity and “why won’t this system talk to that one?” — a tech expert keeps everything running smoothly. They save you hours of frustration and help you avoid costly tech mistakes. Most importantly, they free you to focus on the work that energises you.
Business Mentor or Coach
This is your sounding board, strategic partner, and accountability anchor. They help you stay focused on what matters, build sustainably, and avoid burnout.
As your business expands, complexity increases, whether you ask for it or not.
And when you’re trying to do it all yourself, growth feels heavy instead of exciting.
But when you’ve got the right experts around you?
Growth feels achievable.
Grounded.
Sustainable.
You make clearer decisions because you’re not exhausted.
You have space to lead, not just react.
And you get to build your business with confidence, not crossed fingers.
So many business owners quietly carry this pressure.
But it doesn’t have to stay this way.
If you’d like support in mapping out your own “business support team,” or you’re ready to step into the next stage of your business with more clarity and less overwhelm, I’d love to chat.

Your business doesn’t need you to do everything.
