[Episode 58] Update Your LinkedIn Profile: The Most Overlooked Business Asset

When was the last time you Googled your own name or business?

For many professionals I work with, their LinkedIn profile appears on the first page of Google, often in the top three results. That means potential clients, employers, or partners are likely clicking on it long before they get to your website.

And yet… I see so many profiles sitting idle: no photo, no banner, no updated information. In other words, the first impression someone has of you online is unfinished or out-of-date.

Why this matters more than ever

LinkedIn isn’t just for job seekers. It’s one of the simplest, most powerful tools to:

  • Build trust by showing a consistent and professional presence online

  • Highlight your credibility with clients, peers, and potential collaborators

  • Stay visible in Google search without spending a cent on ads

The best part? You can achieve all of this using LinkedIn’s free tools, both your personal profile and a business page. No Premium subscription is required.

So if LinkedIn gives you a prime spot on Google at no cost, why wouldn’t you want to make the most of it?

The problem I kept seeing

I’ve noticed something. Many colleagues I meet in business are experienced business owners and leaders, yet their LinkedIn profiles don’t reflect the level of professionalism and credibility they’ve built in real life.

It’s not that they don’t care. It’s usually one of three things:

  • They don’t know where to start, so they put it off.

  • They think LinkedIn is only for job hunting.

  • They’re overwhelmed by all the conflicting advice out there.

And in the meantime, their Google ranking is quietly driving people to an online profile that doesn’t do them justice.

Where LinkedIn 101 came from

Earlier this year, several members of my Success Community approached me and said, “Fleur, can you run something practical to help us actually use LinkedIn properly?”

That’s how the first two live LinkedIn workshops in 2025 came about. We worked together, tweaking headlines, updating About sections, and clarifying the purpose of each member’s profile and business page.

The feedback was immediate:

  • Members realised how much visibility their profiles already had.

  • They felt relief at finally knowing what to do step by step.

  • Most importantly, they left feeling confident that LinkedIn could work for them without needing Premium or spending hours every week.

After those workshops, a funny thing happened. Colleagues of my members started reaching out: “I heard you ran a LinkedIn session. Can I get access to it, too?”

That’s when I realised this wasn’t just a one-off workshop. It needed to become a resource anyone could use. And so, LinkedIn 101 was born, a structured online course that captures the best of the workshop experience, with room for you to work at your own pace. Plus all those that have attended the live workshops receive access as well.

What you really need to know

  • At the very least, you want your profile to be up-to-date and consistent with your brand.

  • Your photo, banner, headline, and About section matter far more than most people realise.

  • Your use of LinkedIn should be tied to your business aims and goals, whether that’s engaging your existing client base, attracting new clients, or building credibility in your field.

Most people do nothing because they think it will take too much time. The reality? With a little structure, you can make small but powerful changes that create immediate impact.

The hidden opportunity

If your LinkedIn profile already ranks well on Google, you’re sitting on an opportunity. By making intentional updates, you can turn your profile from a static placeholder into an active business asset. One that reflects your values, your professionalism, and the results you deliver.

Doing nothing leaves that opportunity untapped. And I don’t want that for you.

Ready to take action?

That’s why I created LinkedIn 101, a practical, step-by-step course designed to help business owners, BDMs, and not-for-profit leaders set up a profile and page that actually work. It focuses on the fundamentals you need to know, using only a free account.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Polish your personal profile and business page so they look credible and professional.

  • Understand where to use keywords and how to position yourself.

  • Add featured content, awards, testimonials, and media mentions.

  • Develop a consistent engagement routine that works for your schedule (not against it).

  • Create a 12-week LinkedIn action plan you can actually stick to.

If you’ve been ignoring LinkedIn, or if your profile is still the same as when you set it up years ago, this course will give you the clarity and confidence to bring it back to life.
